Australian Government invests $499k in Australia's sovereign photonics capability
For the first time, these detectors will be manufactured at scale in Australia where the development of waveguide integration and bespoke packaging solutions will take the technology closer to a full product solution.
The highly sensitive devices are able to detect single photons, making them a key enabling technology for optical quantum computing and quantum-secure information transfer, yet there is great potential for transformative uses in sensing (LiDAR, medical imaging), metrology, photonics, biotechnology, and remote sensing.
These detectors are already used by leading Australian research groups, but require further product development to achieve impact in the industry application space. As commercialisation partner, Emergence Quantum will take this technology from academics to market, leveraging expertise in cryogenic packaging of superconducting and semiconducting devices.
Lead Translator Dr Alison Goldingay says, “This project will help establish a sovereign, Australian-based capability for superconducting nanowire single photon detectors, a critical technology underpinning quantum computing, secure communications, and advanced sensing. Building this capability locally strengthens Australia’s position in the global quantum ecosystem while opening the door to transformative applications in healthcare, environmental monitoring, and industry.”
UNSW Dean of Science Sven Rogge says, “The close partnership with Emergence Quantum, an Australian quantum startup, highlights how research-led innovation and emerging companies work together to accelerate world-class technologies from the lab into real-world deployment.”
Emergence Quantum Senior Quantum Scientist Cassandra Chua says, "Support from the AEA enables our partnership with Sven's group in UNSW, and will help accelerate the research translation of superconducting nanowire single photon detectors from academic research into the commercial space — forming an additional building block to Australia's quantum ecosystem."
